Independent Study
Alta Vista Independent Study Program (AVIS)
This innovative independent study program is a voluntary program of choice for any student within the SBUSD interested in pursuing independent study. At AVIS, students are paired with one of three full-time credentialed teachers, each with a maximum caseload of 25 students (per Full-time Teacher Equivalent). Each of these teachers holds a Multiple-Subject and Single Subject credential as well as being housed in various other content areas. In addition to these three teachers who serve as mentors as well as teach specific content areas, AVIS has a Math and Spanish teacher. All teachers host subject specific workshops for all students enrolled in English, Social Studies, Science, Math and Spanish course. The program is located at North Campus on the La Colina Junior High School campus.
The AV Independent Study program allows for students to complete their high school graduation requirements through a variety of instructional models, each supported by a credentialed teacher. All coursework is aligned to the CCSS or NGSS standards and fulfills a-g eligibility requirements.
AVIS students participate in many of traditional high school activities including district and statewide assessments, field trips, emergency drills, and special events such as Back to School Night, Awards events, Graduation and others.
